چکیده

The isolation of glutathione by Hopkins in 1921 and his experiments suggesting that this compound is probably an intermediary in biological oxidations and reductions awakened an active interest in the biological significance of sulfhydryl compounds in general (1, 2). Among the fundamental data pertaining to these compounds are their oxidation-reduction potentials. Soon after the discovery of glutathione a number of attempts were made to measure these potentials by electrometric and calorimetric methods. In all except the most recent investigations the potential observed in aqueous solutions with noble metal electrodes was independent of the concentration of the oxidized form (R-SS-R) (3-5). The data fitted an empirical electrode equation of the form

Studies on the oxidation-reduction potentials of heme proteins. VI. Human hemoglobin treated with various sulfhydryl reagents.

The oxidation-reduction equilibrium of human hemoglobin treated with various sulfhydryl reagents has been studied. The following modified hemoglobins have been characterized: hemoglobin treated with cystine, hemoglobin treated w2th cystamine, hemoglobin treated with iodoacetamide, and hemoglobin treated with 2 eq of p-mercuribenzoate. In all cases the modified hemoglobins have an oxidationreduc...

Renewable co‐polymers derived from castor oil and limonene*

Biobased monomers derived from castor oil as well as from limonene suitable for thiol–ene copolymerization were synthesized. Di‐10‐undecenylether 2 was obtained via GaBr3‐catalyzed reduction of 10‐undecenyl 10‐undecenoate 1. Diene ether 2 and (R)‐limonene 5 were reacted in two steps using radical thiol–ene addition reactions to dithiol ether 4 and dithiol 7, respectively. Diene ether 2 and dith...

Natural mediators in the oxidation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by laccase mediator systems.

The oxidation of polycyclic aromatic compounds was studied in systems consisting of laccase from Trametes versicolor and so-called mediator compounds. The enzymatic oxidation of acenaphthene, acenaphthylene, anthracene, and fluorene was mediated by various laccase substrates (phenols and aromatic amines) or compounds produced and secreted by white rot fungi. The best natural mediators, such as ...

Redox modulation of hslo Ca2+-activated K+ channels.

The modulation of ion channel proteins by cellular redox potential has emerged recently as a significant determinant of channel function. We have investigated the influence of sulfhydryl redox reagents on human brain Ca2+-activated K+ channels (hslo) expressed in both human embryonic kidney 293 cells and Xenopus oocytes using macropatch and single-channel analysis. Intracellular application of ...

Redox Regulation of Large Conductance Ca2+-activated K+ Channels in Smooth Muscle Cells

The effects of sulfhydryl reduction/oxidation on the gating of large-conductance, Ca(2+)-activated K+ (maxi-K) channels were examined in excised patches from tracheal myocytes. Channel activity was modified by sulfhydryl redox agents applied to the cytosolic surface, but not the extracellular surface, of membrane patches. Sulfhydryl reducing agents dithiothreitol, beta-mercaptoethanol, and GSH ...
